The search and rescue teams were stretched to the limit to overcome the mysterious phenomenon of robots behaving badly. The rescue competition consists of four rounds. At the end of round one, there was much frustration and we performed at a level below what we had anticipated. As the day unfolded, our error detection and problem-solving skills, along with much perseverance and grit got us through to the end of the fourth-round. Each round presented new challenges but we had managed make improvements. Hannah should be commended for not only giving Robocup a go as a first-time competitor but also for competing solo on the day as her partner was unavailable.

It not only enables our girls to have an opportunity to learn to programme but also to develop essential skills in a real setting. Often family members also go through the stress and frustrations that these keen programmes are experiencing. It is with family support and willingness to take a risk that these girls learn to adapt to unforeseen challenges. Rarely does everything work out perfectly on the day. Robocup is reknown for providing an experience with the whole spectrum of tears through to ultimate joy. On this occasion we all performed absolutely stupendously. Each time the girls completed a challenging task they earned points, racing up the leaderboard. EPro8 encourages teamwork, communication and perseverance. Each team of 4 worked tirelessly over the 2.5 hour period without stopping for food, water or toilet breaks! We are incredibly proud of our girl's first attempt in this competition.

Dan Goldin was Administrator of NASA from 1992 - 2001. Dan had a strong upbringing in music both playing and listening. His father regularly took him to museums and to planetariums. This was where he discovered his love for space. Dan's passion to work in space and go to space grew through his childhood. He made planes and dreamed of becoming an astronaut. When Dan was a youngster, NASA has not yet been established so space exploration was new and unknown.

Doctors advised Dan not to play contact sports due to his extreme myopic eye condition. There was the risk of becoming totally blind if his retina detached so his astronaut dreams were always going to be challenging.

"My eye doctor laughed so hard I thought he was going to fall over"

Dan's father taught him to "pick an objective and never give up no matter how difficult it got"

"Don’t let anyone or anything get in the way of your objective"

Even to this day, Dan still has a dogmatic approach. His story about his approach to learning to paddleboard resulted in 3 broken ribs and he was black and blue all over BUT he didn't stop until he had mastered it!

"You cannot stop the march of technology! "

Dan believes that the greatest opportunities in the near future are in the life sciences. Leaning how our environment impacts our physical make up - the size of our bodies, shape of the face, etc.

This knowledge can then be used in a weightless space environment - what can we learn from life science that will help us in space?

Currently, there is a lot of research being carried out by geneticists. Crucial decisions are being made by ethicists as we manipulate gene structures. What then if an error were to occur, where do we as humans get to have our say? Society sleepily goes about it's daily business whilst the actions of some scientists are being executed which will have a huge influence the future. Dan believes that "Humans need to be more in charge of their futures."

The purpose of the Space programme has always been for the benefit of humanity. A balance of science and ethics might enable astronauts to transform biology to be better prepared in space. Dan sees manufacturing as something that will be done by bacteria and not human hands.

"The future lies in the balance of biomedicine and bioethics with physics and engineering skills"

The concept of being able to "walk and chew gum" is an expression that Dan used often. It means that have the ability to attend to the problems of today but we also must look to the future otherwise concentrating too much on the here and now will stifle exploration and development.

Some parting advice from Dan:

<span style="color: blue; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: blue; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

Never worry about what others think of you. Whatever is in your core is right.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When you make a change it’s not a popularity contest. Don’t expect to be loved. Accept the consequences

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Believe in yourself and understand you are fully in charge of your destiny. Believe in your version of life and your conduct in life.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Be outstanding in whatever you do.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Don’t lose energy in worrying about things you don’t have control over.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Don’t fight the battle of increasing the number of women.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Develop yourself to be the best and then you will be contributing to the world.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Competition is great as long as it is to sharpen the mind; rather to 'win'

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Be the best engineer that happens to be a woman, not a woman who is an engineer

When Ms Campbell comes to our class we put on our computer science thinking hats, but today instead we dressed up in our pirate outfits for Pirate Day.

Throughout the term, we made our own maps, compasses and features for our maps. We learned of North, South, East & West directions and how we can use the directions as an algorithm ( a set of clear and accurate instructions) to get from our pirate ship to find the buried treasure.

The challenge was to transfer the dotted pathway into directional code.
It is a polymer that is in its early stages of development. Hydrogel is expected to be self-adhesive and bendable material. The possibilities of its use look promising. This polymer could be the answer to a range of issues from playing a role in cancer treatments to becoming parts for soft robotics. Hydrogel can be fashioned into Lego-shaped blocks that may be a carrier of chemicals that could help in the delivery of life-saving medicine and treatments.
Girls have selected an image that is personally significant to them. Specific coloured strips have then been carefully selected and arranged on the base. The laser cut image is then added on top. The overall image that shines through portrays a gorgeous piece of art.

Prefect Holly Macdonald was supported by Hannah Ferguson and a number of senior girls from the Technology and Innovation and Arts Council. This week the activity was to try Sphero Robots. Once the girls learned how to drive the spheros, then the challenge was to negotiate obstacles and to have a speed race. We look forward to many more lunchtimes when Holly and her team will be able to introduce other exciting tech activities.
Students worked in teams to problem solve and fix an electric motor kit to a bicycle. This year there are record numbers of students across New Zealand who have registered interest to take part.
Mia and Angelina joined with Charlie and Tim from Christs' College to start this adventure. The evolocity challenge continues outside of school time with specific days set aside for building. These build days provide access to experts who support students to learn skills in welding, programming their controller using code as well as checking that their vehicle meets the criteria for racing. This project provides students who have an interest in engineering, science, and design, mechanical and electronic technology to apply their knowledge to achieve a vehicle fit for racing. The regional competition usually takes place in October and within this challenge are several competitions. We look forward to following their progress.
Plant forms are being brought to life to move as if they are in their natural surroundings.
This year St Margaret's College are offering robotics, coding as well as some new clubs aimed at the upper Junior School and Middle School students. Construction Club is designed to enlighten the brains of the girl engineers. Students developing their skills in the Construction Club will get an opportunity to enter the EPRO8 Challenge later on in the year.
We also hope to introduce a Minecraft club starting in term 2. Planning for this club is well underway and will be student facilitated with Audrey Campbell mentoring these student leaders.
Robotics for year 4 - 13 continues to show keen interest. Girls working on coding and creating their robots will get a chance to enter Robocup competing against other students in rescue, theatre or soccer.
Since the introduction of our code club in 2015, we have steadily built on the number of girls getting involved. We now have girls from other schools participating in our code clubs. There are three levels of coding. Our beginners learn Scratch, Intermediate coders are working with Python and our advanced coders are grappling with C++ and creating projects of personal interest.
Making Maths fun and modifying the context in which children are using their numeracy skills is something that Nicole has introduced to her class this year. Nicole has engaged her students by creating a number of variables that can be manipulated to challenge students. She has used the idea of the dartboard and the areas where the score is doubled and tripled. Velcro balls act as the 'darts' and students throw the ball at the wall that starts the calculations. The first activity today has been to double or triple the outer number, then adding all the numbers together. Functions can vary, as can the numbers around the outside of the target. "Triple Tuesday" will run as a regular activity in Maths.centreforinnovationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05569037657571070642noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4987940203002529293.post-32426807065651955522018-11-04T19:14:00.000-08:002018-11-04T19:14:25.044-08:00The Future of Education

Recently, I took the opportunity this week to reconnect with Frances Valintine, founder of the Mindlab in Christchurch. I was keen to hear how her view of technology and innovation had changed since my last encounter with her two years ago. I was not disappointed and her words rang true and reinforced how we need to be rethinking what is possible.

Frances reiterated that technology should be used as a tool and not purely for consumption. It is a tool that allows for the creation of content and in developing the creativity. In schools, we need to be mindful that apps are great tools that allow our students to create content, but apps do not necessarily teach children to learn the skills that are required for the future.

In the past, looking to the future we had a linear view compared with what we now face which is an exponential future that is unpredictable. We are all challenged by this and we need to move to face the fast-changing world ahead of us. We often talk about “the future” as if its ahead of us but it’s here, right now!

We live in a Global world so we need to think globally, even though New Zealand is a small country and we only contribute a slither to the world’s economy. We can examine our economy at a micro level within our communities and in NZ, and at a macro level which looks at what’s happening in the world. Why is technology important to New Zealanders? It ranks the third highest in returns of our GDP behind our primary industries and tourism.

Take a look around, technology underpins all jobs today, tomorrow and in our future.

We live in a data-rich world. Technology is augmented in almost every job and yes, there are jobs that are more efficiently being completed by robots. These jobs may be disappearing from the list of what our students might be applying for but there is also a new list of jobs titles that are being introduced to the job market. These new jobs may look like nothing we have ever envisaged in the past but the transference of skills to these new jobs will be essential for future job seekers. Are we as teachers upskilling our students to have the skill set that enables our girls to transfer their skills into these newly created jobs?

Imagine if you had no access to technology?
How would you check the weather? See the news?

Is NZ training people with the right skills as technology is underpinning every workspace? Is New Zealand lagging behind the rest of the world and has the change hit us yet?

The internet has meant that information is available to all globally and unfortunately, New Zealand has had a decline in productivity compared to other nations. Agritech in Israel is booming yet NZ has been slow to react. Think about it . . . Israel doesn’t have fertile land, yet they are ahead of NZ in adopting and developing in the agritech sector.

Our children under the age of 13 years are wired differently. They don’t know about the analogue world that existed when I was a child. Some will have never been into a bank, they may not even understand the function of a bank!

If the phone was ringing, wouldn’t you think that they would answer it? Not so . . . because how would they know who was calling?

These children, when put in a room to complete a task, will want to talk, to consult with each other, to problem solve, and they work quickly in short bit size chunks. They will often want to know why they have to complete a task in a specific way.

In the digital world there are many ways to get to the end outcome - as teachers should we continue to manipulate the learning journey to the achieve the end result or are we better to guide the learning depending on how which way the child takes?

How do our students communicate beyond the school gates? It’s not by the use of emails! Yet this modality of communication continues to be the primary platform for teachers and schools. There are a multitude of platforms that our younger population are using - Trello, Slack, Instagram, Snapchat, Facetime, Hubspot, Sharepoint etc., This begs the question then, why do we limit what we use for learning in schools?

Have you asked a primary school student about an iPod? They may correct you and think you mean iPad. iPods are old technology! What about cashless banks? This almost seems an oxymoron. Generation Z is the 19-year-old age group. They have an appreciation and can relate to the world I grew up in during the end of the 20th century. Frances described this group as having “a small rear vision mirror to look back through and a huge forward facing screen.”

Technology has positive benefits but it also can have negative benefits. The “Fortnite” online game is having a massive negative effect on children and young adults. There is now a leaderboard offering thousands of dollars as daily rewards. Credit Cards are being used to fund online rewards at $20/day or more. Children and young adults are sleep deprived.

Explaining to children why screen time should be limited is crucial. When online, you cannot unsee things you accidentally see on the internet. Taking precautions and setting up rules in our homes such as turning off the internet after a specific time, is to help children manage their device and to promote good sleep patterns.

Have you ever had a conversation with an artificial intelligent machine? Soul machine artificial intelligence technology (ai) is here.

https://bit.ly/2zpb5mb

Most children under 13 years are happy to engage with a human looking ai. New Zealand developed technology in this field has been developed to be emotive and to relate to humans. This augmentation of the robot into a human form has allowed for the learner to learn faster and to continue to learn beyond foundation knowledge and skills.

Are they substitute teachers? Possibly, but imagine going beyond the basics and learning more talking with a machine when the human teacher is unavailable?

So what? What is your “and/&”?

Frances challenges us to clarify what your “AND/&” might be.

Whatever we have learnt in the past is of value to us but

we now need to take all of this AND AUGMENT!

We need to be sharing resources rather than build spaces. ‘Social bump’ spaces are wifi places that anyone can congregate to work and learn. These are shared spaces that don’t have a specifically designated purpose. School is but a fraction of a young person’s learning. NCEA has now recognised this through micro-credentialing. What we learnt in the past may no longer be relevant so reinventing and being flexible and adaptive is what we need to empower in our girls. We live in a world where knowledge and information are readily available to us. We “Google” and “YouTube” if we need to find out how to do something.

A personal story Frances shared was about her own son who had a dream to fulfil a job that doesn’t currently exist. He sought chunks of knowledge to create his own credentials to be an expert in the internet of things in residential homes.
